In this conversation, Josh LaCount chats with Nainita Desai about his multi-theme score for “Immortality,” a live-action, non-linear video game that immerses you in three cult films from the writers of “The Queen’s Gambit, Lost Highway, Wild at Heart, and don’t look now.

“In Immortality, you investigate the mysterious disappearance of Marissa Marcel – an actress who was to become a big star in the 70s but who only ever starred in three films that were never released to the public, and players must sift through lost footage from Marissa’s 1968, 1970 and 1999 films to find out what happened to her.

Nainita talks about her early days as a composer, her instrumentation choices, her songwriting process, her upcoming Emmy nominations, and more.

Two-time Emmy-nominated Nainita Desai is the winner of the 2021 World Soundtrack Awards for Discovery of the Year. Nainita has been described by Empire Magazine as one of the top 5 composers to watch for 2022 and leading UK film critic Mark Kermode among the top 3 film scores of 2021.

Among various BAFTA, Oscar and Emmy acclaimed productions, Nainita’s recent projects include the Netflix documentary 14 summits: nothing is impossible, produced by Oscar winner Jimmy Chinn, for which his score earned Emmy, HMMA and ASCAP Composer Choice nominations. Other credits include documentary feature Parts of the body which premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, as well as the interactive video game film Immortality created by Sam Barlow.

Desai’s other credits include an Oscar-nominated, BAFTA and Cannes-winning documentary for samaplus Sundance The reason I jumpan immersive cinematic exploration of neurodiversity, for which it received a News and Documentary Emmy nomination for Best Score.

After a degree in mathematics and sound studies for cinema at the NFTS in the United Kingdom, Nainita began her career as a sound designer on feature films for directors such as Werner Herzog and Bertolucci, as well as an assistant engineer musical for Peter Gabriel. An Ivor Novello nominee, double BIFA and Cinema Eye Honors; BAFTA Breakthrough Brit, winner of the 2019 RTS and IFMCA Breakthrough Composer of the Year award, Nainita seamlessly transitions from working with orchestras to writing scores using her collection of bespoke instruments, incorporating electronics, found sound and design experimental sound that informed her experimental and deeply immersive approach.

She is also an elected senate member of the Ivor Academy and sits on the BAFTA Film Committee and the AMPAS International Committee.


IMMORTALITY is the new game from Half Mermaid, a video game production company based in Brooklyn, New York. Founded in 2017 by writer-director Sam Barlow, three-time Bafta winner, creator of His history. The game centers on Marissa Marcel, a movie star who made three never-released movies and then disappeared. The game will be available on August 30, 2022 on Steam, GOG, Xbox Series X/S, Game Pass, iPhone and Android via Netflix Games.
