Fingerstyle Acoustic Guitar Composer and Virtuoso Mark Vickness Launches “Alluvial Fans” on YouTube

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina, USA, April 22, 2022 / — Two years after the release of his highly acclaimed CD, Interconnected, composer/guitarist Mark Vickness is releasing Alluvial Fans on YouTube, the first composition to be released from his upcoming album, In the Shadow of the Rain. In addition to Mark on acoustic guitars, the ensemble features two-time Grammy-winning violinist Mads Tolling, oboe and cor anglais virtuoso, Matt Renzi, cellist Joseph Hebert, Dan Feiszli on electric bass, percussionist Grammy winner, MB Gordy and tabla master, Ty Burhoe.

Says Mark, “My third solo recording project (after Places in 2017 and Interconnected in 2020) In The Rain Shadow is mostly inspired by a move to the high desert (Owens Valley in California) in 2020. Most tracks are drawn from geological studies or weather features that we encounter daily. This includes Alluvial Fans – music meant to reflect my appreciation for the opportunity to absorb the wonders of life in the rain shadow. This is humble , awesome, peaceful, exciting, quiet and beautiful at the same time.

Mark Vicness

Mark began his musical training on the piano at the age of six. The path that led him to the modern fingerstyle composer/guitarist he is today included a bachelor’s and master’s degree in composition, studies in classical piano, guitar, sitar and tabla, years as a jazz guitarist, composer and arranger, multiple film scores, and three decades of recording and performing as the instrumental half of acoustic fusion duo, Glass House, who have released three CDs, two EPs, and a host of widely viewed YouTube videos. Mark’s experience spans a wide range of genres, from free improvisation to West African drum and dance ensembles, from Motown and funk bands to big band jazz and orchestral conducting. Trained in composition by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Mel Powell, Mark has recorded and performed with world-renowned musicians, including two-time Grammy winners The Turtle Island String Quartet, legendary bassist Michael Manring and guitarists Alex DiGrassi and Don Ross.

Mads toll

An internationally acclaimed violinist and composer, Mads is a two-time Grammy Award winner and winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll Rising Star in 2016. As a former member of the Turtle Island Quartet and bassist Stanley Clarke’s band, Mads spent most of his professional life touring internationally. Mads has been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition and his recordings have received rave reviews in Downbeat Magazine, Strings Magazine, The Washington Post and the San Francisco Chronicle. He has performed with The Who, Chick Corea, Ramsey Lewis, Paquito D’Rivera and many more. More recently he has toured with Bob Weir and the Wolf Pack.

Matt Renzi

Matt is a sought-after woodwind player (oboe, English horn, saxophone) and composer in the United States and around the world for twenty years as a soloist and of the Matt Renzi Trio. He holds a Bachelor of Music/Performance from Berklee College of Music and a Master of Arts in Classical Composition from San Francisco State University. Matt has performed and recorded with Marc Johnson, Michael Formanek, Eddie Marshall, Herbie Lewis, Ben Monder, Eberheard Weber and Bobo Stenson.

Joseph Hebert

Joe has recorded and performed in multiple genres with hundreds of artists including Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, Tower of Power and Ray Charles. He is assistant principal cellist of the Oakland East Bay Symphony. The Oakland Tribune describes him as “one of the Bay Area’s most expressive cellists.

Dan Feiszli

Dan has performed with notable artists such as James Moody, Raul Midon and Mickey Hart. He has toured nationally and internationally with artists such as Julio Iglesias, Nicole Yarling and Raul DiBlasio, and performed in pit orchestras for musical theater productions such as Hamilton, The Lion King and Billy Elliot. In addition to his performing career, Dan has featured on hundreds of recordings as a bassist and recording engineer, and has recorded and mixed albums reaching the highest positions on the US Top 40 and jazz radio charts. Dan’s work with Mark dates back years as bassist with Glass House and sound engineer for Places and Interconnected.

Ty Burhoe

A disciple of the great tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ty is internationally recognized for his instrumental role in creating unique collaborations that weave tabla with other global traditions. He’s been featured on numerous soundtracks, including the Academy Award-winning documentary, “Born into Brothels.” Ty has recorded and performed with a wide range of artists including Zakir Hussain, Art Lande, Bela Fleck, Walter Becker (Steely Dan), Mamadou Diabate, Kitaro, Jon Anderson (Yes) and many more. Ty’s collaboration with Mark dates back to early recordings with Glass House.

MB Gordy

One of LA’s finest studio musicians, Grammy-winning percussionist MB Gordy has recorded on albums by artists including Neil Diamond, Aaron Neville, Faith Hill, fun, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Josh Groban, Guns and Roses, Childish Gambino and Beck plus hundreds of film and TV scores (including Agent Carter, American Sniper, Battlestar Galactica, Bourne Legacy, Frozen, Game of Thrones, Spiderman, Straight Outta Compton, Terminator and many others). MB has toured internationally with Rita Coolidge, Three Dog Night, the Doobie Brothers, John Tesh and Josh Groban, and performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The National Symphony, Frank Zappa, Jacky Evanho, Andrea Bocelli, Johnny Mathis, Yoko Ono, Seal and Idina Menzel. With a master’s degree in music from the California Institute of the Arts with an extensive study of ethnic percussion, he has held a wide variety of roles over the past three decades as a performer, composer, teacher and recording musician.
